Strategic Online Marketing Tip: Don’t be a Twitiot

Twitiot: An individual who doesn’t recognize the importance of social networking;   B) An individual who can’t understand the simplicity of working with Twitter.

Would you like a better explanation? Take a look at my picture on the About Me page – I’M the Twitiot.

I actually fit part B definition the best.

After two Master’s Degrees in the medical field, on-the-job training for three years in marketing at a top children hospital and homeschooling four children you would think I could figure out how Twitter works.

The other day called my sister Stephanie from More In Store Marketing to find out how to send an @Reply -  for the 10th time.   And she called me a Twitiot.

Do NOT do as I do – but rather as I say (a typical parenting rule).

Social networking has worked for centuries – it is what network marketing companies are built on.  Today the process is faster and more streamlined using the Internet – but the concept is the same.

It brings people together who have the same interests and desires.

BUT, before you think it is the perfect MARKETING tool, think again.

It is a way to interact with others, find new outsourcing options, connect with those who can answer questions or help out – but in order to get a good traffic stream or develop an entire business model you’ll find yourself spending hours a day tweeting, facebooking and linking in.

And, unless you are in the service industry this method of marketing can be a colossal waste of your time.

TIP: Recognize and use social marketing for the tool that it is – and don’t try to make it into something it ain’t.
